APAMSA @ UCSF seeks to be a cornerstone in the conversation about Asian-American identity and physicianship, and what it means to understand and address the needs of both the Asian American, Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community and all communities of color. As AANHPI health professionals, we challenge and examine the responsibilities we have towards advocating for and promoting the health of our own communities, while also educating ourselves on the role we play in the broader fight against racial injustice. APAMSA seeks to celebrate our diverse cultures while also working in solidarity and building relationships with other POC organizations on campus (SMNA, LMSA, WC4BL) and locally. We aim to build a soulful, loving community that highlights our unique collective experiences, and provide a space to discuss and explore these meaningful topics.

The Asian Pacific American Medical Students Association (APAMSA) is a national organization of medical and pre-medical students committed to addressing the unique health challenges of Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) communities. APAMSA serves as a forum for student leaders to engage these health issues and develop initiatives and projects addressing those needs. The local, regional, and national activities of APAMSA aim to promote the health of the APIA community and help healthcare workers understand how to care for APIA patients in a culturally sensitive manner. Finally, APAMSA provides an important venue for medical students to meet, exchange experiences, and develop personally and professionally through leadership and service.

APAMSA's foundation was laid in 1993 by Asian American students worried about the present and future of the APIA community. Dr. B Li co- founded the e-mail bulletin board 'AAMSnet' for Asian American medical students in 1994 and co-formed the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association in 1995.

APAMSA was formed because issues of APIA health were largely ignored by existing organizations. Since its initial formation in 1995, APAMSA chapters have formed at schools across the country to improve the health and well-being of the APIA community and promote understanding of the unique challenges Asian Pacific Americans face in medicine.

Even with efforts to increase the number of minority ethnic groups in science and medicine, the proportion of black men pursuing and obtaining degrees in these fields has reached a historic low. In 1986, 57% of black medical school graduates were men — but by 2015 that number had dropped to just 35%, even as the total number of black graduates in all fields had increased.1 By providing opportunities for networking, community-building, and mentorship, Black Men in Medicine at UCSF strives to dismantle the barriers that have perpetuated the dearth of black men in the field and act as a resource for those currently pursuing careers in medicine to find success.

We will explore the fascinating anatomy of the brain, delve into the complex interplay between mind and behavior, and host college prep workshops, all at UCSF. The Camp also features many hands-on activities including suturing, brain dissections, performing the basic neuro exam, and much more!

Cardiac Camp at UCSF is an entirely free, hands-on learning experience for Underrepresented Minorities in Medicine, specifically Black, Latinx, Native American, and mainland Puerto Rican high school students from under-resourced school districts/regions of the Bay Area. During this week-long immersive experience, selected students will learn about the basic anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system, heart disease and prevention in early and late life, and be exposed to live cardiac testing modalities. These students will have the unique opportunity to not only build health literacy for themselves but to also disseminate basic health knowledge to the communities they arise from, with the hope of addressing the distrust in medical care that exists in underserved/disadvantaged communities.

In addition, students will be partnered with UCSF affiliated faculty and students who will provide longitudinal mentorship in their pursuit of higher education. Cardiac Camp will be funded by several Departments and Organizations at UCSF, such that all resources, lectures, and hands-on experiences are entirely free to students.

The Emergency Medicine Interest Group at UCSF (EMIG) is a student-run group that promotes and explores the field of Emergency Medicine.
The goal of EMIG is to promote awareness of all aspects of Emergency Medicine and to provide educational opportunities for medical, nursing, pharmacy, and physical therapy students interested in Emergency Medicine. EMIG organizes an introduction to emergency medicine elective, a procedure workshop, an annual EMIG symposium, a wilderness medicine elective, outreach programs to the community, and a speaker series with experts in emergency medicine. Our mission is to help trans and cis incarcerated women better understand their bodies and learn about health-related subjects that are important to them. We have developed several 60-90-minute workshops that meet once a week at the San Francisco County Jail. Our curriculum involves anatomy models and diagrams (hands-on learning), games (jeopardy and family feud), and teach-backs (providing the opportunity for women to teach one another and take ownership of the material). This volunteer opportunity is currently on hold due to Covid-19, but will hopefully resume when the jail is again open to visitors. We hope to build the advocacy arm of our group in its stead as we await re-opening, working on behalf of women currently and formerly incarcerated by way of political action.

During the fall quarter, we also lead an inter-professional elective (1.0 credits P/F). The Health, Policing, and Incarceration Elective brings together students from the UCSF health professional schools to learn about the intersections of health, healthcare, and the prison-industrial complex (PIC). Students will learn about the effects of police violence and incarceration on physical, mental, and community health; the landscape of healthcare access within U.S. carceral facilities; and the specific implications of the prison-industrial complex for particular communities. The elective will cover the intersections of these issues with other health-related topics such as reproductive justice, mental health, substance use, LGBTQ+ health, and immigration. Each week, various speakers—including formerly incarcerated people, healthcare professionals, researchers, and community organizers—will share their experiences and expertise with the class with the opportunity for questions and discussion.

In current medical school curriculums, especially on the west coast, medical students' exposure to the combined field of adult internal medicine and pediatrics is limited. While med-peds has a rich 40-year history, there is still currently a void of med-peds residency training programs in the Northwest US. This course will shed light on a lesser known, but highly valuable career path that offers the depth and breadth of two disciplines, as well as flexible career goals and a broad range of specialized patient niches, including ever-growing populations of children with serious and chronic illnesses that survive into adulthood with these same illnesses, for whom dually-trained physicians are well-matched.

The Internal-Medicine Pediatrics (Med-Peds) Interest Group presents an opportunity for students interested in pursuing a career in internal medicine, pediatrics, or a combined residency in internal medicine and pediatrics (otherwise known as "med-peds") to be exposed to faculty members and careers within the combined med-peds field, including career pathways, training venues and opportunities, and the similarities and dissimilarities that exist between a med-peds program and separate medicine or pediatrics programs.
