The Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA) at UCSF seeks to be a cornerstone in the conversation about Asian American, Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander (AANHPI) identities and physicianship, and what it means to understand and address the needs of diverse AANHPI communities and all communities of color. Even with efforts to increase the number of minority ethnic groups in science and medicine, the proportion of black men pursuing and obtaining degrees in these fields has reached a historic low. In 1986, 57% of black medical school graduates were men — but by 2015 that number had dropped to just 35%, even as the total number of black graduates in all fields had increased.1 By providing opportunities for networking, community-building, and mentorship, Black Men in Medicine at UCSF strives to dismantle the barriers that have perpetuated the dearth of black men in the field and act as a resource for those currently pursuing careers in medicine to find success.

Cardiac Camp at UCSF is an entirely free, hands-on learning experience for Underrepresented Minorities in Medicine, specifically Black, Latinx, Native American, and mainland Puerto Rican high school students from under-resourced school districts/regions of the Bay Area. During this week-long immersive experience, selected students will learn about the basic anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system, heart disease and prevention in early and late life, and be exposed to live cardiac testing modalities. These students will have the unique opportunity to not only build health literacy for themselves but to also disseminate basic health knowledge to the communities they arise from, with the hope of addressing the distrust in medical care that exists in underserved/disadvantaged communities.

In addition, students will be partnered with UCSF affiliated faculty and students who will provide longitudinal mentorship in their pursuit of higher education. Cardiac Camp will be funded by several Departments and Organizations at UCSF, such that all resources, lectures, and hands-on experiences are entirely free to students.

Access to dermatology is limited in many minority communities, resulting in numerous racial and socioeconomic health disparities.

Research shows that Black and Latinx communities are more likely to be diagnosed with melanoma at later stages, less likely to receive systemic treatment for psoriasis, and more likely to have active atopic dermatitis when compared to white populations.

This organization aims to teach young people from underserved areas how to take care of and protect their skin. We hope that by providing these educational resources we can work to improve skin health and reduce disparities in dermatology.

The CARE Initiative is a student-led organization dedicated to advancing reproductive health education and promoting equitable access to resources for women and marginalized communities. As an official Registered Campus Organization (RCO), we partner with local women’s shelters and community organizations to host interactive, evidence-based educational trainings. Our sessions cover a wide range of reproductive health topics, including menstrual health, perimenopause, fibroids, contraception, and maternal wellness.
Purpose:
The purpose of the CARE Initiative is to empower individuals with knowledge and tools to make informed decisions about their reproductive health while addressing disparities in education and access. Through hands-on workshops, community-centered outreach, and collaborative efforts with local partners, we aim to foster trust, reduce stigma, and create lasting connections between medical students and the communities we serve. In current medical school curriculums, especially on the west coast, medical students' exposure to the combined field of adult internal medicine and pediatrics is limited. While med-peds has a rich 40-year history, there is still currently a void of med-peds residency training programs in the Northwest US. This course will shed light on a lesser known, but highly valuable career path that offers the depth and breadth of two disciplines, as well as flexible career goals and a broad range of specialized patient niches, including ever-growing populations of children with serious and chronic illnesses that survive into adulthood with these same illnesses, for whom dually-trained physicians are well-matched.

The Internal-Medicine Pediatrics (Med-Peds) Interest Group presents an opportunity for students interested in pursuing a career in internal medicine, pediatrics, or a combined residency in internal medicine and pediatrics (otherwise known as "med-peds") to be exposed to faculty members and careers within the combined med-peds field, including career pathways, training venues and opportunities, and the similarities and dissimilarities that exist between a med-peds program and separate medicine or pediatrics programs.

The Interventional Radiology Interest Group (IRIG) is a student-run organization to help students explore the field of Interventional Radiology (IR). Intended for medical students of all classes who are interested in the practice and changing scope of IR. Through weekly lectures by interventionalists from the UCSF Department of Radiology, student will be introduced to the various specialties within the field of IR; the fundamental theory, clinical utility, and role of IR in the hospital; and, the most recent scientific advances in and future applications of interventional procedures.

In addition, a focus of the group is to help students prepare for success in navigating applications to new integrated IR residency programs through mentor matching, research opportunities, national conference support, and resident panels.

The mission of the Period Education & Empowerment Project (PEEP) is to empower youth through medically accurate, age-appropriate, and stigma-free menstrual health education. PEEP improves access to information, reduces stigma around menstruation, and supports adolescents in understanding what is healthy while providing free menstrual products.

Pride in Medicine (PrideMed) works to enhance the climate for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer-identifying (LGBTQ) individuals and enrich the career and personal development of these individuals in the School of Medicine. Our mission is (1) to promote a welcoming and inclusive institutional community for LGBTQ medical students and (2) to enhance mentorship and networking opportunities for LGBTQ medical trainees to connect with LGBTQ medical professionals including residents, alumni, staff, and faculty. In addition to serving the School of Medicine, PrideMed works with the UCSF LGBT Resource Center and the inter-professional LGBTQ Student Association to support leadership and research efforts toward serving gender and sexual minority patient populations.

The mission of the Radiation Oncology Interest Group is to connect UCSF preclinical medical students to resources and experiences that allow them to learn more about the field. Traditionally, radiation oncology is introduced to medical students late in their second year. Our goal is to allow students to gain exposure to radiation oncology earlier in their education so they can develop career interests and participate in research. Students will have the opportunity to be paired with a mentor (residents and attendings) in the department who can give advice on planning a career in radiation oncology. The interest group will organize several events throughout the year including a shadowing program, faculty talks, and a resident information panel. We will keep students informed of weekly guest lectures and research opportunities available within the department.

The Radiology Interest Group (RIG) is a student-run organization supported by the Goldberg Center to help students explore the field of radiology. Intended for first-year and second-year medical students who are interested in medical imaging from a clinical or research perspective. Shelter Clinic is formally designated as a Student Service Learning Experience (SSLE) within the School of Medicine's Department of Family and Community Medicine. The clinic's leadership board is made up of pharmacy and medical students.
As an SSLE the Shelter Clinic has a dual mission. First and foremost, we aim to deliver high quality care in a compassionate and supportive way to unhoused people staying in shelters. The mission of UV&Me is to educate youth (k-12) with the knowledge to protect themselves and their loved ones from dangers of skin cancer and UV exposure.

Description: UV&Me is an organization that exists in select medical school such as UCI, UCSD, USC, and Cornell to promote protection against UV radiation. Our chapter will use existing course material to provide education to nearby San Francisco students (primarily in elementary, middle, and high schools) regarding the importance of sun protection from a young age, while also encouraging interest in medicine. Although melanoma is more than 20 times more common in white individuals than in African Americans, skin cancer is diagnosed at a later stage in these populations. Consequently, the 5-year-survival rate for melanoma is significantly worse for people of color, which signifies a need to increase education and outreach to all individuals from a young age. Our organization will augment the existing course material to raise awareness of skin cancer in people of color in addition to meeting the goal of the organization. Finally, we will incorporate the importance of ophthalmologic protection against UV radiation to promote early public health interventions in order to prevent various negative health outcomes. Through these efforts, we hope to increase awareness of skin cancer and eye disease, address healthcare disparities in skin of color, and encourage interest in healthcare in young individuals.
