APAMSA @ UCSF seeks to be a cornerstone in the conversation about Asian-American identity and physicianship, and what it means to understand and address the needs of both the Asian American, Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community and all communities of color. As AANHPI health professionals, we challenge and examine the responsibilities we have towards advocating for and promoting the health of our own communities, while also educating ourselves on the role we play in the broader fight against racial injustice. APAMSA seeks to celebrate our diverse cultures while also working in solidarity and building relationships with other POC organizations on campus (SMNA, LMSA, WC4BL) and locally. We aim to build a soulful, loving community that highlights our unique collective experiences, and provide a space to discuss and explore these meaningful topics.

The Asian Pacific American Medical Students Association (APAMSA) is a national organization of medical and pre-medical students committed to addressing the unique health challenges of Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) communities. APAMSA serves as a forum for student leaders to engage these health issues and develop initiatives and projects addressing those needs. The local, regional, and national activities of APAMSA aim to promote the health of the APIA community and help healthcare workers understand how to care for APIA patients in a culturally sensitive manner. Finally, APAMSA provides an important venue for medical students to meet, exchange experiences, and develop personally and professionally through leadership and service.

APAMSA's foundation was laid in 1993 by Asian American students worried about the present and future of the APIA community. Dr. B Li co- founded the e-mail bulletin board 'AAMSnet' for Asian American medical students in 1994 and co-formed the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association in 1995.

APAMSA was formed because issues of APIA health were largely ignored by existing organizations. Since its initial formation in 1995, APAMSA chapters have formed at schools across the country to improve the health and well-being of the APIA community and promote understanding of the unique challenges Asian Pacific Americans face in medicine.

Sling Health is a student-run group that facilitates biomedical design and entrepreneurship on campus. This incubator brings together student teams from various backgrounds to address medical issues and improve healthcare. Teams are made up of health focused students, such as medical, dental, nursing, pharmacy, and graduate students to bring their expertise to the problems facing healthcare today. Our four objectives for what students will attain as a part of Sling Health at the Bay Area are as follows:

1. To learn about medical entrepreneurship in a multidisciplinary context, with engineering, medical business, and legal perspectives, while gaining team leadership and technical experience.
2. To join a fast-growing national network that has produced many prototypes, patents, and startups.
3. To work with other bright students and faculty on a problem of interest with the supporting resources.
4. Develop novel devices and software applications targeting unmet clinical needs.

The Big Sib Peer Mentorship Program in an informal peer mentorship program that pairs MS1s with MS2 peer mentors. The purpose of the program is to help MS1s transition into med school, build connections, and have continued peer support throughout their education. In addition, the program hosts social events throughout the year to help facilitate communication and socialization between the first and second year med students.

The Bioethics Interest Group works to increase student exposure to ethical principles and decision-making in clinical medicine. The Bioethics Interest Group will coordinate on-campus lectures from ethicists in a wide range of disciplines and facilitate discussion among students about ethical principles and reasoning with workshop-style sessions.

Even with efforts to increase the number of minority ethnic groups in science and medicine, the proportion of black men pursuing and obtaining degrees in these fields has reached a historic low. In 1986, 57% of black medical school graduates were men — but by 2015 that number had dropped to just 35%, even as the total number of black graduates in all fields had increased.1 By providing opportunities for networking, community-building, and mentorship, Black Men in Medicine at UCSF strives to dismantle the barriers that have perpetuated the dearth of black men in the field and act as a resource for those currently pursuing careers in medicine to find success.

We will explore the fascinating anatomy of the brain, delve into the complex interplay between mind and behavior, and host college prep workshops, all at UCSF. The Camp also features many hands-on activities including suturing, brain dissections, performing the basic neuro exam, and much more!

Cardiac Camp at UCSF is an entirely free, hands-on learning experience for Underrepresented Minorities in Medicine, specifically Black, Latinx, Native American, and mainland Puerto Rican high school students from under-resourced school districts/regions of the Bay Area. During this week-long immersive experience, selected students will learn about the basic anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system, heart disease and prevention in early and late life, and be exposed to live cardiac testing modalities. These students will have the unique opportunity to not only build health literacy for themselves but to also disseminate basic health knowledge to the communities they arise from, with the hope of addressing the distrust in medical care that exists in underserved/disadvantaged communities.

In addition, students will be partnered with UCSF affiliated faculty and students who will provide longitudinal mentorship in their pursuit of higher education. Cardiac Camp will be funded by several Departments and Organizations at UCSF, such that all resources, lectures, and hands-on experiences are entirely free to students.

Clinica Martin-Baro is a student-run free clinic committed to addressing the health needs of the uninsured and historically marginalized Latino community in San Francisco's Mission District. Every Saturday, Clinica provides comprehensive primary care services, including laboratory tests and medications, in a linguistically accessible, culturally sensitive environment. The clinic is a partnership between UCSF and San Francisco State University aimed at increasing representation of students from underserved communities in the health professions as well as introducing future health care providers to the challenges our patients face. Through outreach and participatory education, Clinica seeks to generate dialogue amongst students, faculty, and patients; build consciousness around the systemic forces leading to poor physical and collective health; and form community partnerships through which we can create positive social change.

The Committee on Climate Change Policy Response (C-3PR) aims to work alongside the UCSF Academic Senate Sustainability Committee to innovate and advance meaningful policy proposals that can benefit from student activism. In 2017, the Committee will focus its efforts on "Beef-Free UC," a campaign to restrict the ability to purchase and serve beef on campus. In 2018, the Committee will advocate for policies to discourage unnecessary air travel among faculty and students. All Committee meetings will take place at UCSF and center on campaign strategy and execution.

Description/purpose:
The purpose of the Dermatology Access Group (DAG) is to create a bridge between San Francisco shelters and the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFGH). Although a small number of shelter residents are able to receive adequate dermatologic care, the majority of residents face significant obstacles to proper assessment and treatment such as lack of information and education of shelter providers for referrals, dismissal of dermatologic complications as insignificant, and individual hesitancy and mistrust of larger healthcare systems.
Having worked in the Dermatology Shelter Clinic for the past year, the dermatology residents and I found that there was a significant disconnect between shelter residents and ZSFGH. Furthermore, providers were unable to provide adequate care to dermatologic complications due to inherent limitations of a clinic such as limited workforce and treatment options. As creation of two parallel systems of care would be ineffective and counterproductive, we seek to integrate patients more expediently into the existing medical system at ZSFGH.
Throughout the year, we identified that a major barrier to proper dermatology care is shelter providers' lack of information, knowledge and time to refer dermatologic concerns to the ZSFGH dermatology department. After discussion, the various dermatology attendings, medical residents and medical school coordinators deemed that it was necessary to initiate a separate student organization to provide shelters with liaisons to train and assist shelter providers in connecting residents with dermatology complaints to ZSFGH.
In doing so, we hope to reduce these significant obstacles in accessing care that have only worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic for shelter residents experiencing serious, clinically consequential dermatologic illnesses.

Mission: The Dermatology Access Group seeks to address healthcare disparities of unhoused populations of San Francisco by providing education and assistance to San Francisco shelters that will connect residents with dermatologic needs to ZSFGH in order to promote equitable care. In the future, we will also seek to promote access to healthcare through community partnerships with farmworkers and other community organizations.
