APAMSA @ UCSF seeks to be a cornerstone in the conversation about Asian-American identity and physicianship, and what it means to understand and address the needs of both the Asian American, Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community and all communities of color. As AANHPI health professionals, we challenge and examine the responsibilities we have towards advocating for and promoting the health of our own communities, while also educating ourselves on the role we play in the broader fight against racial injustice. APAMSA seeks to celebrate our diverse cultures while also working in solidarity and building relationships with other POC organizations on campus (SMNA, LMSA, WC4BL) and locally. We aim to build a soulful, loving community that highlights our unique collective experiences, and provide a space to discuss and explore these meaningful topics.

The Asian Pacific American Medical Students Association (APAMSA) is a national organization of medical and pre-medical students committed to addressing the unique health challenges of Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) communities. APAMSA serves as a forum for student leaders to engage these health issues and develop initiatives and projects addressing those needs. The local, regional, and national activities of APAMSA aim to promote the health of the APIA community and help healthcare workers understand how to care for APIA patients in a culturally sensitive manner. Finally, APAMSA provides an important venue for medical students to meet, exchange experiences, and develop personally and professionally through leadership and service.

APAMSA's foundation was laid in 1993 by Asian American students worried about the present and future of the APIA community. Dr. B Li co- founded the e-mail bulletin board 'AAMSnet' for Asian American medical students in 1994 and co-formed the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association in 1995.

APAMSA was formed because issues of APIA health were largely ignored by existing organizations. Since its initial formation in 1995, APAMSA chapters have formed at schools across the country to improve the health and well-being of the APIA community and promote understanding of the unique challenges Asian Pacific Americans face in medicine.

Even with efforts to increase the number of minority ethnic groups in science and medicine, the proportion of black men pursuing and obtaining degrees in these fields has reached a historic low. In 1986, 57% of black medical school graduates were men — but by 2015 that number had dropped to just 35%, even as the total number of black graduates in all fields had increased.1 By providing opportunities for networking, community-building, and mentorship, Black Men in Medicine at UCSF strives to dismantle the barriers that have perpetuated the dearth of black men in the field and act as a resource for those currently pursuing careers in medicine to find success.

Cardiac Camp at UCSF is an entirely free, hands-on learning experience for Underrepresented Minorities in Medicine, specifically Black, Latinx, Native American, and mainland Puerto Rican high school students from under-resourced school districts/regions of the Bay Area. During this week-long immersive experience, selected students will learn about the basic anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system, heart disease and prevention in early and late life, and be exposed to live cardiac testing modalities. These students will have the unique opportunity to not only build health literacy for themselves but to also disseminate basic health knowledge to the communities they arise from, with the hope of addressing the distrust in medical care that exists in underserved/disadvantaged communities.

In addition, students will be partnered with UCSF affiliated faculty and students who will provide longitudinal mentorship in their pursuit of higher education. Cardiac Camp will be funded by several Departments and Organizations at UCSF, such that all resources, lectures, and hands-on experiences are entirely free to students.

Shelter Clinic is formally designated as a Student Service Learning Experience (SSLE) within the School of Medicine's Department of Family and Community Medicine. The clinic's leadership board is made up of nursing and medical students.
As an SSLE the Shelter Clinic has a dual mission. First and foremost, we aim to deliver high quality care in a compassionate and supportive way to unhoused people staying in shelters. We hope to create positive healthcare experiences and act as an entryway for our patients to enter the mainstream health system. Secondly, we aim to educate a new generation of health care providers to not only be sensitive to the needs and preferences of unhoused people but to become lifelong advocates for the victims of our dysfunctional political and economic systems.

Street Outreach Collaborative (SOC) is a community-led initiative driven by UCSF medical students to improve the health, well-being, and dignity of unhoused individuals in San Francisco. Our approach highlights compassionate and trauma-informed mobile street outreach, collaborative resource provision, and holistic care.

Our mobile outreach efforts serve to build community and act as a bridge between social and health services and those living on the streets and in encampments. We aim to meet people where they are, and work together to increase access to care services, resources, and referrals. We collaborate closely with community partners, social services, and UCSF organizations to facilitate pathways to health-related services and social support within our community.

Our philosophy reflects our unwavering commitment to upholding the inherent worth of every individual, and we recognize healthcare, housing, and human dignity as fundamental rights. The mission of UV&Me is to educate youth (k-12) with the knowledge to protect themselves and their loved ones from dangers of skin cancer and UV exposure.

Description: UV&Me is an organization that exists in select medical school such as UCI, UCSD, USC, and Cornell to promote protection against UV radiation. Our chapter will use existing course material to provide education to nearby San Francisco students (primarily in high schools) regarding the importance of sun protection from a young age, while also encouraging interest in medicine. Although melanoma is more than 20 times more common in white individuals than in African Americans, skin cancer is diagnosed at a later stage in these populations. Consequently, the 5-year-survival rate for melanoma is significantly worse for people of color, which signifies a need to increase education and outreach to all individuals from a young age. Our organization will augment the existing course material to raise awareness of skin cancer in people of color in addition to meeting the goal of the organization. Finally, we will incorporate the importance of ophthalmologic protection against UV radiation to promote early public health interventions in order to prevent various negative health outcomes. Through these efforts, we hope to increase awareness of skin cancer and eye disease, address healthcare disparities in skin of color, and encourage interest in healthcare in young individuals.
