Bay Area Youth Science Program

About BAYS

The Bay Area Youth Science (BAYS) Program is an eight-week, paid summer internship for rising high school juniors and seniors to conduct research in labs at UCSF on topics ranging from drug discovery and design, cancer biology, computational chemistry, infectious disease treatments, COVID-19 therapeutics, structural biology, protein biophysics, and much more!

Founded by our former co-president, Chase Webb, BE-STEM has committed to partnering with the BE-STEM program to provide mentorship and community to young scholars of shared identities. Below is a look into the work BE-STEM has done with BAYS this year!

Panels and Lunch with Graduate Students

Several BE-STEM members provided firsthand perspectives on navigating higher education both inside and outside of the classroom to the BAYS participants through a series of lunches and panels. On Fridays, BE-STEM graduate students and CSEO personnel taught a course that covered  research basics, aspects of the hidden curriculum, life skills, financial competency, career path guidance, and college preparation.
